Men’s Basketball Cruises Past CCNY, 103-56

More news about: Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY--- In what was a total team effort, the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team improved its home record to 7-1 this season, coasting past the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY), 103-56, in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match-up this afternoon at the West Quad Center.

The win propels the Bulldogs to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the CUNYAC; while the Beavers drop to 1-17 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

All 13 players who entered the game for the Bulldogs scored at least one point, as BC shot a blistering 63.5% (40-63) from the field for the game, while also converting 47.8% (11-23) from beyond the arc. Brooklyn shot 57.1% (12-21) from the free throw line.

As impressive as the Bulldogs were on offense, their defensive intensity was just as impressive, as BC held CCNY to 27.8% (20-72) shooting from the field, including 31.3% (5-16) from downtown. The Beavers also shot 55.0% (11-20) from the charity stripe.

The Brooklyn defense also tallied up 16 steals, while forcing CCNY into 27 turnovers, which led to 36 points for BC.

The Beavers held the rebounding edge, 47-41.

After a lay-up from CCNY's Jordan Ortega opened the scoring, the Bulldogs would jump out on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead at the 16:45 mark of the half, as BC would never trail in the game again. Following a pair of free throws by the Beavers' Terrence Johnston that cut the Brooklyn advantage to four, 12-8, with 13:05 left in the period; the Bulldogs would rattle off seven straight points to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 19-8 (11:41).  BC would lead by as many as 22, 37-15 (5:22), before taking a 46-30 lead in to the intermission break.

The Beavers 16-point halftime deficit would be too much to overcome, as the Bulldogs would cruise throughout the second period on their way to their 103-56 victory.

This marks the second time this season that BC has gone over the 100-point plateau, as Brooklyn defeated Old Westbury, 101-86, back on November 22nd.

Leading the way to the victory was senior guard Amil John and junior forward Keiran Halton, who each netted a team-high 14 points. John also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to record the double-double. Senior guard Tyshawn Russell and junior forward Kavon Baker each chipped in with 13 points, while junior forward Steven Grant added 10 points in coming off the bench.

Other notable performances came from senior guard Jonathan Martinez who netted eight points, while going a perfect 2-for-2 from three, as well as junior forwards Filipp Bochkov and Abdul Lanlokun and senior guard Wade Kornegay, who all finished the day with seven points apiece.

For CCNY, Hector Hernandez recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs. Johnston finished the day with 15 points.

Brooklyn returns to action this Monday, January 30th, as the Bulldogs will look to score an upset, when #14 William Patterson visits the West Quad Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
