UMF wins going away at Green Mountain

POULTNEY, Vt. -- Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) and Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) each struck for 15 points as the University of Maine at Farmington made its way past Green Mountain College 75-42 in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action tonight.

The Beavers (10-7 overall, 10-1 NAC) are scheduled to visit Castleton State College Saturday (women at 1 p.m., men to follow). The Eagles slipped to 3-12 (2-9).

Leary made five 3-pointers to amass his point output, while Sumner hit three shots from long distance. Joe McCloskey (Howland, Maine) chipped in 11 points and team-high seven rebounds in the victory with Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) registering nine assists.

UMF connected on 45.3 percent (29-64) of its field-goal attempts, while the Eagles made 33.3 percent (16-48).

Carnelius Green led Green Mountain with 13 points followed by Kyle Middleton with 12 points. Jeremiah Aponte pulled in a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.

The Beavers blitzed the hosts from opening tip-off with a 14-3 run capped by a Nate Carson (Orrington, Maine) 8:38 into the first half. After a Jakerion Ales 3-pointer made it 14-6, UMF reeled off the game's next nine points with a McCloskey layup giving the visitors a 23-9 lead with 6:09 until intermission. UMF led 32-19 at halftime.

The Beavers bolted into the second half, amassing a 54-28 advantage over the first 7:22 of the second half. Leary and Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) each tallied six points as UMF outscored Green Mountain 22-9 out of intermission.

A Green dunk with 7:18 remaining made it 64-42, but UMF scored the game's final 11 points to cruise to the 75-42 final.
