Rams Outlast Old Westbury in Overtime

Old Westbury, N.Y. - Farmingdale State junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the game at 60-60 and forced overtime after he converted a layup with only three seconds remaining in regulation. Matthews was fouled in a tie game with one second left on the clock in overtime and hit 1-of-2 free-throws leading the Rams to a 71-70 victory.

Tied 49-49 with 6:28 remaining Old Westbury (9-8, 6-4) used a 9-0 run spanning the next 1:33 to open up a 58-49 advantage. The Rams (13-4, 9-1) answered with a 6-0 run as Matthews converted a layup and free-throw and senior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.) connected on a 3-pointer.

Old Westbury held a 59-55 lead until freshman forward Ibrahim Johnson (New York, N.Y.) made a layup off the pass from Flournoy and converted the free-throw to cut the deficit to 59-58 with 1:44 to play. Freshman guard Joshua Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y.) increased the Panthers lead to two, 60-58, after hitting 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. Matthews sent the game to overtime as he scored the tying layup off Joshua Smith's (Deer Park, N.Y.) pass with only three seconds left in regulation.

Old Westbury scored the first six points in overtime to quickly take a 66-60 lead. Flournoy cut the deficit in half as he was fouled on a 3-point attempt and converted all three free-throws. After an Old Westbury offensive foul, Flournoy tied the game at 66-66 with a 3-pointer off the feed from Smith. After a Panthers layup tied the game at 70-70 with 11 seconds remaining, Matthews was fouled with one second left on the clock and converted 1-of-2 leading the Rams to a 71-70 victory on the road.

Farmingdale State was led by Matthews who scored a game-high 22 points and added 15 rebounds. Flournoy scored 13 points, while Smith tallied 11 points and added a game-high six assists.

Senior center Tavon McNair (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 21 points and 21 rebounds, while junior guard Kerel Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 20 points for Old Westbury.

The Rams next will host Mount Saint Mary in a conference game on Saturday, January 28th at 3:00 p.m.
