The Lake Forest College men's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game Tuesday night, a 63-60 decision at Carthage College. Forester senior guard Chris Roets came off the bench to knock down three three-pointers and score 11 points.
Roets was one of three Foresters to reach double figures in scoring. Senior post player Travis Clark led the team with 19, nine rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward Nate Bateman finished with 10 points, seven boards, and a pair of blocked shots.
It was an extremely efficient shooting night for the Foresters, who made half of their field goal attempts, 10 of 19 shots from three-point range, and five of six free throws. The visitors held Carthage to 41.1 percent shooting from the field and just 24 percent (6-for-25) from beyond the arc. Lake Forest had a commanding 39-20 edge in rebounds but committed 22 turnovers to the Red Men's nine.
The Foresters scored the game's first eight points. Carthage came back and took its only lead of the contest (25-23) with 4:24 remaining in the opening period. A basket by Bateman tied the score and two by Clark gave Lake Forest a four-point lead and the margin was four again (30-26) at halftime.
The score was tied at 33 and again at 35 early in the second before a three-pointer by Forester senior forward Dayton Young put the visitors ahead for good. A three-pointer by Roets with 5:41 to play extended the Forester lead to a game-high nine points and another three-pointer by junior point guard Jeff Beck made the lead nine again with just 1:53 to play. Lake Forest did not score again but Beck's rebound of Carthage's third missed three-pointer in the final 20 seconds sealed the victory.
The Foresters are now 6-1 this season while the Red Men fell to 2-4.
Lake Forest will resume Midwest Conference play on Saturday, December 17, at St. Norbert College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
