Baldwin-Wallace Edges ‘Berg, 80-74, in Berea

BEREA, Ohio—Junior second-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) poured in a team-high 26 points, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell to Baldwin-Wallace College, 80-74, tonight in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Rudolph Urpsrung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio. Givner shot nine-of-15 from the field, pulled down six rebounds and added three assists and three steals.

Junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) added 16 points on six-of-12 shooting and a game-high seven rebounds for the Student Princes (6-12, 4-7 OAC). Sophomore forward Victory Fortkamp (St. Henry) tallied 14 markers.

Baldwin Wallace (11-7, 6-5 OAC) was led by Kevin Krakowiak with a game-high 31 points on a 13-of-19 shooting performance, including four-of-six from beyond the arc. Kyle Payne and Tyler Ferrell each added 10 points.

A layup by Tyler Ferrell started Baldwin-Wallace off with a 4-0 lead at the 17:17 mark.

Krakowiak scored seven points within the game's first four minutes to lead B-W to an 11-4 lead, but Davis answered by sparking a 13-4 run with nine points, including a dunk at the 11:47 mark that gave Heidelberg a 17-15 lead, its first of the game.

Both teams nearly matched each other shot-for-shot until B-W pulled away from a 30-30 tie at the 3:48 mark as Krakowiak scored four of the Yellow Jackets' final six points of the half to give B-W a 36-32 lead heading into the intermission.

B-W continued to lead through the early stages of the second half, but the Student Princes would continue to ship into the Yellow Jacket lead. Trailing 43-38 with less than 15 minutes to play, the Berg went on a 10-3 jaunt to take its first lead of the second half at 48-46 as Givner canned a three-pointer at the 11:44 mark.

Following three more ties, B-W took the lead for good with 7:56 on the clock as Krakowiak sank a triple for a 60-57 Yellow Jacket lead. Krakowiak later converted a three-point play with 4:28 to play to cap a 10-5 run for a 70-62 lead.

The Student Princes cut the deficit back to two points at 70-67 after Fortkamp made a three-pointer and senior guard CJ Powell (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Foley) sank a pair of free throws at the 3:46 mark. B-W, however, continued to match Heidelberg with each field goal down the stretch to secure the win.

Heidelberg shot 48.9 (23-of-47) percent from the field and was 75.0 (24-of-32) percent from the charity stripe, but turned the ball over 24 times.

B-W was 47.7 (31-of-65) percent from the field and 42.9 (six-of-14) percent from three point range and held a 34-29 advantage on the glass.

The Student Princes return to the hardwood Saturday, Jan. 25 for a 4 p.m. tilt with Muskingum University in the second game of a Shoot for the Cure/Coaches vs. Cancer men's and women's doubleheader.
