ANDERSON, Ind. - Transylvania's Brandon Rash scored the go-ahead field goal Saturday and Tate Cox added three clinching free throws with in the final 15 seconds, lifting the Pioneers over Anderson 58-55 in Heartland Conference men's basketball action.
Transy (15-2, 9-1 HCAC) continues to top the conference race while Anderson is 8-9, 4-6 in the league.
Neither team led by more than seven points in the second half. Rash's score gave the Pioneers the lead for good, 54-52, at the 2:49 mark.
Anderson wouldn't score again until hitting a meaningless three at the buzzer. Transy got free throws from Meyer (two of four) and Cox (three of four) to remain a game ahead of Hanover and two up on Franklin and Rose-Hulman in the HCAC race.
Ethan Spurlin led the Pioneers with 14 points while Cox finished with 11 and Meyer 10. Rash had six points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Pioneers forged leads of as many as 10 points in the first half, which ended with Transy on top by a single point, 26-25. Spurlin paced the Pioneers early with eight points and Meyer notched seven as Transy canned 10 of 23 from the field (43.5 percent).
Anderson hit 40 percent of its shots in the first half but missed all four of its free throws while Transy was perfect in four attempts. The Ravens came out of the box hot, leading by five just three minutes into the contest before Transy ralled to ho ahead by 10, 22-12, on a Chris Owens triple at the 6:21 mark.
Anderson went on a 13-2 run to go ahead 25-24 only to see the Pioneers grab the halftime advantage on Meyer's jumper at the buzzer.
Transy outshot the Ravens from the field, 52 percent to 43 percent, and converted eight of 11 free throws. Anderson did not have a free throw attempt in the second half, coming up empty in four attempts overall. Brock Morrison had 21 points to lead the home team, but he had a layup attempt blocked by Cox late in the game. Phil Hogan had15 points for Anderson, but he missed a layup with a minute to play that could have tied the game.
Transy is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Franklin for a 7:30 p.m. HCAC matchup.
