Tigers Fall Short in Comeback Bid at Sewanee on Friday Night

More news about: Trinity (Texas)

Sewanee, Tennessee - The Trinity men's basketball team nearly pulled off a last-minute Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win on Friday night, but fell short in a 61-58 loss at Sewanee: University of the South.

Trinity (9-7, 5-3) was able to come back from a 10-point halftime deficit (33-23) to take a brief lead (46-45) in the second half of action.  Sewanee built a five-point lead with just under two minutes to play, though, and was able to hold off Trinity in the end.

With 25 seconds left, Trinity was within one point (57-56) after four straight free throws made, but the Tigers only got one more basket from that point on.  After hitting just 1-5 from the field and 2-4 from the line in the final minutes, Sewanee nailed all four free throw attempts in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.

Zach Lambert led Trinity with 19 points and six rebounds, hitting 7-15 from the field and 2-5 from three-point range.

Heath Hopson had another strong performance off the bench, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds in 25 minutes of action.  Ryan Beall tied Lambert for the team lead with six rebounds, adding seven points.

Trinity connected on just 32% of its shots and nine total field goals in the first half, leading to the early deficit.  The Tiger defense clamped down in the second half by allowing just seven field goals and 30% shooting to Sewanee, leading to the near comeback.

Trinity will finish its SCAC weekend with a game at Centre College on Saturday night.  The Tigers return home on January 27, hosting Rhodes College in continued SCAC action.
