Spartans Eclipse Century-Mark Yet Againin 105-71 win over Lyndon

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Spartans hit 19 triples and out-rebounded Lyndon by over 20 as they cruised to a 105-71 victory over the Hornets in North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Glenbrook Gym.

 

It was a balanced effort for the hosts as 12 different players scored from behind the arc and Castleton shot 19-for-44 from downtown to improve to 9-7 on the season and 8-1 in NAC play. The Spartans also out-rebounded Lyndon by a 57-36 margin as the Hornets dropped to 2-8 in conference play and 2-14 overall.

 

Senior Greg Hughes (West Rutland, Vt.) led all scorers with 16 points, including a 4-for-6 performance from three. Sophomore Tyler Ackley (Scotia, N.Y.) added 14 points and four assists while junior Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and ten boards.

 

Lyndon got 14 points and six rebounds from Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) while Daquan Vaughn (Washington, D.C.) and Steve Gantt (Farmville, Va.) chipped in with 11 and ten points respectively.

 

The Spartans used their fast-paced offense and pressure defense to build up a 21-8 lead just 5:13 into the contest. They expanded it to 28-13 on a Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, Vt.) layup, which jumpstarted a 13-0 run by Castleton. After the run, the two teams traded baskets as the Spartans held a 59-37 advantage at the break.

 

Castleton opened the second half on a 14-6 run over the first 6:14 to extend the lead to 73-43 over the Hornets. The Spartans continued to keep up the hot shooting and extended their lead as high as 38 with just over a minute left before finishing with the 105-71 victory.

 

Mustapha added nine points and rebounds, while Matt Cooney (Washingtonville, N.Y.) was also solid with eight points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

 

Castleton returns to action on Tuesday when they hit the road for a contest again Green Mountain, beginning at 5:30 pm.
