Captains Stymie Pride for Tenth Straight Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Christopher Newport men's basketball team overcame a spirited first half effort by Greensboro College on their home floor to pull away with a 91-69 USA South victory.  Conley Taylor and Mike Cherry led CNU's five double digit scorers with 18 points apiece in their tenth straight win, improving to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the USA South.

The Captains trailed by only one at the end of the first half but trailed for almost the entire half.  Freshman, Nik Biberaj's nine first half points provided a spark that was needed as the Pride's perimeter pressure made it difficult for the Captains guards to get in the flow of the game.

A Luqman Tijani layup with 4:18 to play in the first half extended the Greensboro lead back to eight, but the CNU backcourt quickly answered and fell into rhythm  with layups by Paul Meredith and Mike Cherry.   Meredith and senior Conley Taylor each added another basket after beating their defender to the rim and cut the Pride's lead to one at the half.

While CNU struggled to get defensive stops during the first half, the Captains came out of the locker room for the second half and suffocated a Greensboro team that averages over 80 points a game on the season.  Freshman Devin Ballam, Bobby Freedman and Mike Cherry all played key defensive roles during the first nine minutes of the second half when CNU used a 28-13 run to seize the lead.

Paul Meredith hit a three pointer from the corner to give CNU their first lead of the second half with 16:23 to play and the Captains never looked back.  Conley Taylor added a three-point play and driving layup; Freshman Adam Otey, who played his first significant minutes of the season due to injury, hit a key three pointer and freshman guard Mike Cherry added two threes of his own to increase the lead to 14 points.  The Captains would not look back as they out scored the Pride 51-28 in the second half.

Both teams entered the contest undefeated in USA South play and looking to stake their claim to the top of the conference standings.  CNU now owns a one game advantage in the loss column and will return to conference action Wednesday night against Averett in Danville.

CNU will step out of USA South play for a Monday night matchup against Salisbury University in the Freeman Center.  Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network and Xtra 99.1 FM.  A live video webcast will be available on CNUsports.com.
