Farmingdale State - 81, Maritime College - 47
Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State men's basketball team defeated Maritime College, 81-47, Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The win improves the Rams overall record to 11-4, 7-1 in the Skyline, while the Privateers fall to 2-14 on the season, 2-7 in conference play.
The Rams scored the first six points of the game and built its lead up to 18-13 with 11:33 left in the half. The Privateers cut the deficit to just one, 18-17, before freshman Tyler Brown (New York, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer at 7:47 to give the Privateers their only lead of the night. Farmingdale State fought back and ended the half on a 13-2 run to hold a 31-22 lead at the break.
The Rams came out strong in the second, expanding their lead to double-digits and as much as 22 points in the first five minutes. 14 second-half turnovers by Maritime led to 12 points for the Rams. The Farmingdale lead grew to 30 points with 10:03 to go, squandering any chance for the Privateers to come back.
The Rams were led by junior AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who recorded his 13th double-double of the season in the first half, entering the break with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He finished the night with 23 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. Freshman Ibrahim Johnson (New York, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
For Maritime, senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored 27 points for the second consecutive game, while also leading the team with seven rebounds and three rebounds. Junior Henry Evans (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied six points and sophomore Jack Cole (Bethany Beach, Del.) chipped in with five.
The Rams will now host Purchase College on Saturday, January 21st in a conference doubleheader with the women's team. The women tip-off at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3:00 p.m.
