SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (January 6, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team went down 14-4 in the first six minutes and never recovered in a 71-50 loss to Skidmore College to open Liberty League play on Friday at the Williamson Center.

The Brewers (4-5, 0-1 Liberty) wrap up the road trip against Union College on Saturday, January 7, at 4:00 p.m. The Thoroughbreds (7-2, 1-0 Liberty) host Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Trailing 21-11 with 10:14 left in the first half, Vassar senior Nick Justiz spurred a 9-2 run with a 3-pointer to put the Brewers within three points of the lead at 23-20.

It was the closest the Brewers would come to the lead as the Thoroughbreds stretched the margin to 33-20 with a 10-0 run.

Vassar sophomore Evan Carberry hit a triple with two seconds left in the half to cut the Skidmore lead to 35-27 at intermission.

Skidmore's lead grew to double-digits early in the second half and persisted as the Thoroughbreds shot 53.6 percent from the field while limiting the Brewers to 30.8 percent in the second half.

Sophomore Sam Rappaport led Vassar with 10 points, shooting 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Freshman Luka Ladan tallied nine points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Brian Lowry and John Mantas posted a game-high 13 points apiece for Skidmore. Gerard O'Shea added nine points, a game-high eight steals, and a game-high five assists.
