Tartans Use Long Ball to Rally Past Devils 67-64

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team suffered a 67-64 loss at Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday night. The Tartans rallied from a 10 point deficit in the second half, hitting five of 10 three-pointers for the win.

 

The Tartans took an early lead, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers in the opening minutes of the game. The Devils countered and the teams played even throughout the first half. The lead was never more than three points with Carnegie Mellon pulling in front, 11-8, just three minutes into the contest.

 

CMU held a 27-25 edge late in the half. Sophomore Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) tied things up with a seven foot jumper. Logan Furr (Sharon, Mass./Beaver Country Day) made a steal and was fouled. He hit one of two free throws to put the Devils up, 28-27.

 

The Tartans answered on the other end before Greg Nicol (Aberdeen, Scotland/Taft School, Conn.) closed out the half with a lay-up to give Dickinson a 30-29 lead at the break.

 

The Devils jumped out to a 35-31 advantage to start the second half but CMU scored six straight to retake the lead, 37-35. The lead changed hands over the opening eight minutes with the Devils holding a 45-44 advantage at the 12:00 mark.

 

Honig drove baseline to give the Devils a 47-44 lead with 11:44 remaining in regulation. The Devils came up big on defense, extending the lead to 53-44, just over two minutes later. The Devil lead reached double-figures on a Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) lay-up as they pulled in front, 57-47.

 

The Tartans fought back, cutting the deficit to five, 59-54, with just over four minutes to play. They went back to the three-pointer, pulling within a field-goal at 61-59. Wixted was fouled and converted both free throws before CMU knocked-down another triple to cut the Dickinson lead to 63-62 with under two minutes to go in the game.

 

Honig hit one-of-two from the line to make the score, 64-62 at the 1:32 mark. Sean Brophy drained the team's ninth three-pointer of the night to put the Tartans up, 65-64, with 1:03 on the clock.

 

The Devils fouled with 27 seconds left and controlled the rebound on a miss. They failed to score and were forced to put Brophy on the line with seven seconds on the clock. Brophy hit both to put the hosts on front, 67-64.

 

The Devils had the ball with 5.1 seconds to play. They had two desperation tries to tie the game but both shots were off the mark.

 

Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) led the Devils with 14 points, hitting 6-of-9 shot from the floor. Honig tallied 14 points and five rebounds while Wixted finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School)  chipped in with 10 points and three assists.

 

Christian Manoli led Carnegie Mellon (5-6) with 20 points, hitting 8-of-9 shots from the floor.

 

The Red Devils slip to 5-7 overall. They return home to face Haverford College on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
