QUINCY, Mass. -- The University of New England men's basketball team received a game-high 16 points from junior Charles Fenner III (Bronx, N.Y.) and won its first contest of the season Tuesday night on the road, defeating Eastern Nazarene College, 60-54, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
Fenner made 7-of-13 shot attempts from the field, and added seven rebounds to go with three assists. Senior Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) tossed in 11 points -- eight of which came in the first half -- and had four assists. Classmate Jarryd Rossignol (Caribou, Maine) went for 10 points, and Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) pulled in a team-best eight boards.
UNE (1-12, 1-5 CCC) hit two treys in the early-going to jump out to a 6-0 lead, but found itself down 14-8 just over nine minutes in. Mike McCoy had seven points for the Lions in the stretch.
The next seven went back in the Nor'easters' direction to edge in front (15-14), and the match was still close (tied 28-28) after an ENC hoop with 1:19 to go in the first period.
Winn used what time was left to drain a three-pointer and then a fast-break two, providing Big Blue with a 33-28 cushion at the half. UNE shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from the field in the frame.
Still down by five (37-32) as the second half began, a 7-0 spurt from the Lions in 1:36 momentarily wiped away the Eastern Nazarene deficit and made it 39-37.
Rossignol answered with a lay-up and then two freebies with 12:42 left, and UNE did not relinquish the advantage (41-39) from then on.
The Nor'easters built the margin up to as many as 10 twice -- the last time coming at 55-45 with 4:32 to go -- before a pair of free throws by Eastern Nazarene's Kris Bergstol cut the UNE lead to four (58-54) with 34 ticks remaining. The hosts came up empty on their final three shots and Big Blue tacked on two more free throws to secure the win.
McCoy led the Lions (3-11, 2-5 CCC) with 11 points. Bergstol finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Max Barbosa chipped in with nine -- all in the second stanza.
UNE returns to Biddeford for an 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Endicott College on Thursday, while Eastern Nazarene plays host to Curry College the same evening.
