Gustavus and Anderson top Macalester and Peters

Macalester shot 76% in the opening half and led by 11 points at the intermission, but Gustavus Adolphus knocked down 70% of its second half shots to beat the Scots 86-70 at the Leonard Center.

 

Mac's Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) scored 19 of his career-high 31 points in the opener stanza, going a perfect  7-for-7 from the field, including 5-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.  The Scots were 8-for-10 on first half three-pointers and were 19-for-25 overall in the period for a stellar 76% mark.

 

On top 17-8 in the early going, the Scots began a 14-2 run at the 13:25 mark, boosting their lead to 31-12 on Peters' fourth straight successful three-pointer.  Macalester's shots kept dropping throughout the half as the home team led 47-36 at the intermission. 

 

The Gusties, however, went 19-for-27 in the second half while holding Macalester to six baskets, and took their first lead at 55-54 at the 13-minute mark.  The Scots re-gained the lead temporarily on their next possession, but then the Gusties began a key 18-2 run to go up 73-58 with 7:29 to go.

 

Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) also had a solid game for Macalester, going 8-for-13 for 16 points.  Bert Yaffe (Fy., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) came off the bench for seven points and Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan) handed out four assists.

 

MIAC scoring leader Seth Anderson scored 23 of his game-high 33 points for Gustavus in the decisive second half, and also had four assists on the game.  Tyler Grey added 16 points and four Gusties had four assists.

 

Macalester drops to 1-12 on the season, 1-7 in the  MIAC.  Gustavus goes to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the MIAC.
