The St. John Fisher College Cardinals fell to visiting Alfred University, 76-62, on Saturday afternoon at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-2 in the Empire 8 and 9-6 on the season; Alfred improves to 2-2, 9-4.
The Cardinals held three slim leads early in the contest, with Alfred taking control of the game at the 14:42 mark of the first half. From that point on, the visitors would never trail, defeating the Cardinals on their home court.
In the second half, Fisher was only able to get within seven points of the Soaring Eagles, but Alfred would go on to build a 22-point lead at the 3:43 mark. Sharp shooting from the outside proved beneficial to the Soaring Eagles, who made seven of 10 three-pointers attempted in the second half, good for 70%.
Justin Plata beat his career record in points, which was set in Friday's contest, by scoring 23 in the loss. Jordan Gettings totaled 15 points, while Optimystik Kinard had nine.
The Cardinals trailed by eight heading into the locker room, with Alfred holding a 37-29 advantage after the first 20 minutes. Gettings averaged one point per minute in the stanza, scoring 10 points on 10 minutes played. Sean Byrne, in his first career start, shot perfect from both the floor and the free throw line, scoring five of his seven points in the half.
Fisher will kick-off a five-game road trip at 8 p.m. on Friday when it travels to face Empire 8 foe Hartwick College. The Cardinals will then face conference leader Stevens Institute of Technology in a 2 p.m. tilt on Saturday.
