SHREVEPORT, LA - Senior Trevon Malone tallied his second consecutive double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but Centenary held off a late charge by Mississippi College to pick up an 87-84 victory on Thursday night in the Gold Dome.
The Choctaws (3-9) trailed 80-68 with 3:38 remaining, but a steal by junior Jesse Taylor and a basket by Malone cut the lead to just 84-82 with 1:14 to go.
After a missed shot by the Gents, sophomore Caleb Vaughan missed a potential game-tying jumper with just :31 seconds remaining. Centenary made three of four free throws to push the lead to 87-84 with :12 seconds remaining.
Senior Marlon Ester had a contested three-pointer rim out as the game ended.
Centenary was aided by going 29-36 from the free throw line, while the Choctaws went 14-18. MC was also outrebounded by a count of 35-28, but Malone pace MC with six offensive boards.
Sophomore Brandon Blake scored a season-high 22 points, going 10-13 from the floor, and tallying four assists. Senior Marlon Ester also scored 14 points, making 4-9 three-pointers, while also picking up five helpers.
Maxx Nakwaasah led the Gents with 28 pionts and 10 rebounds, making 14-17 free throws, including the two that put the game away. Jonathan Blount scored 25 points, going 10-13 from the foul line.
Centenary shot 63% (17-27) from the floor in the first half, also making 7-12 three-pointers.
The Choctaws made a season-high eight three-pointers, going 8-17 from behind the arc.
MC will move on to face East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Marshall, TX.
