Gordon shoots down Men’s Basketball

BRISTOL, R.I. – A torrid shooting performance helped Gordon College blow past the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team Thursday evening, as the Fighting Scots won by a 77-62 score.

Gordon shot 61.2% in the game from the field, including a 9-for-15 mark from three point range for a 60% clip. Prior to tonight, the Hawks had not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 46.7% overall on the season.

Gordon's led early on in the game, beginning with David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) putting in a layup for the first score of the night. Roger Williams would eventually take a one-point lead on a three-pointer by Mike Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) to make it 8-7.

Dempsey knocked down a jumper at the 13:27 mark to break a 10-10 tie. From that point on, Gordon would never relinquish the lead, using that basket to spark a 13-2 run. The Hawks came within six (24-30) on a jumper by Matt Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) with 4:52 left in the half. Yet Gordon ended the period back on top by double figures, taking a 40-30 lead into the break.

RWU made it a seven-point deficit early in the period, with Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) putting in a shot to make it a 38-45 game. The Fighting Scots responded with a three-pointer by Park Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) on the next possession. Gordon took its largest lead of the game at the 10:04 mark, with Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) laying up a bucket to give the Scots a 63-40 lead. Gordon comfortably maintained its advantage en route to the win.

Four players scored in double figures for Gordon, including Dempsey, who almost had a triple-double with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Alex Carnes (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. Thomas finished with 13 points, while Miersma scored ten.

Flanagan led the Hawks with 19 points. Igoe finished with seven points and four rebounds. Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) added three points, five rebounds, and five assists. Clifford, Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass.), James LeCardi (Fair Haven, N.J.) each scored six points off the bench.

Roger Williams (6-6, 2-3 CCC) will be on the road at Wentworth on Saturday, while Gordon (6-6, 5-0 CCC) hosts Salve Regina on Saturday.
