Chris Davis' big second half keyed ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater's 75-70 win over UW-Platteville Wednesday night in Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater.
With the score 8-7 in favor of Whitewater at 16:07, Platteville used an 8-2 run to take a 15-10 lead at 13:52. With the Pioneers holding their largest lead of the half, 22-16 at 10:19, Whitewater used a 7-0 run to re-take the lead 23-22 with 7:56 left in the half. Platteville regained the lead and led 36-34 at the break.
Senior forward Matt Weik led Platteville with ten points in the half, hitting 4-5 from the field, including 2-3 beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Eric Bryson duplicated Weik's numbers, ten points on 4-5 and 2-3.
Whitewater began the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 43-36. UW-W extended its lead to twelve, 66-54 at 7:08, for the largest lead in the game by either team. That lead didn't last long, as the Pioneers scored the next nine points to make it 66-53 with 2:17 on the clock. UW-P inched closer, to within two, 72-70 with 0:23 remaining, but Whitewater sealed the win making three of four free throws in the waning seconds.
Davis, UW-W's senior center, came into the game leading the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 24.7 scoring average. After a four point first half, when he went 2-8 from the field, including 0-3 from the arc, Davis added 19 in the second half on 6-9 shooting, hitting 2-3 from three point range. Davis was also the game's leading rebounder with ten. Davis led five Warhawks in double figures. Freshman guard Quardell Young scored 14, junior forward Luke Knoble ten, senior forward Alex Edmonds scored ten in his first game of the season, and Bryson also notched ten points. Sophomore guard Alex Merg passed out four assists. Platteville was led in scoring by senior guard Brett Stangel's 19, also adding five assists. Weik scored 13, and sophomore guard Eric Gerber led both teams with seven assists.
Whitewater made the most of a free throw advantage, hitting 18-23 while UW-P went 7-9 from the stripe.
UW-W, 14-1 overall and tied for first place in the WIAC at 5-1, will host UW-Superior Saturday at 3:00 in Williams Center.
