Cyclones Fall To Pre-Season Favorite Cavaliers 108-92

RADNOR, Pa. (January 9, 2012) – Despite a late first half comeback, the Cyclones were unable to take down the pre-season Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) favorite #14 Cavaliers as they fell 108-92 on Monday night.

The Cavaliers came out attacking early, going on a 10-0 run to open the game. The Cyclones would not go down without a fight however, answering with a 10-3 run of their own to 13-10 early on. 

Down 42-41 with just under two minutes left in the half, the Cyclones rallied with six consecutive points by Max Hughes (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond)Andy Charles (West Orange, N.J./Montclair), and Zhimir Butler (Paterson, N.J./Manchester) to give the Cyclones a 47-42 lead entering the locker rooms.

Coming out of the second half, a tough foul cost the Cyclones a three-point play to limit their lead to two, but Hughes was able to respond with a long three to put the Cyclones back up 50-45. Centenary continued to exchange baskets with the Cavaliers early on, but with about 16 minutes left in the game found themselves in foul trouble.

Down 57-55, the Cyclones committed back-to-back fouls, including one outside the perimeter to allow the Cavaliers to respond with five unanswered points and a three point basket by Fran Rafferty to put Cabrini up ten.

From there, the Cavaliers continued to power through the Cyclones defense as they took advantage of free throws and three point plays to go on to walk away with a 108-92 win over the Cyclones.

Hughes finished the game with a total 20 points, three rebounds, one assist and a steal for the Cyclones while the freshman Butler contributed with a career best 17 points, 7-9 from the floor including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.

The Cyclones continue in action on Wednesday when they travel to Gwynedd Valley, Pa. to take on Gwynedd-Mercy at 8:00pm as part of the men and women's doubleheader.
