MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball season, which seemed to be in the fast lane, has taken a sharp left turn. The Eagles returned to Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday, but MSOE handed Edgewood College their first NAC loss of the season 64-59 at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. The setback marked the Eagles third defeat in their last four outings.
Edgewood College (10-3, 4-1 NAC), one of the top shooting teams in the nation, struggled to score in the second half of the game. After shooting 52.2 percent (12-for-23) in the first half and holding a narrow 29-25 lead, the Raiders limited the Eagles to just 34.6 percent (9-for-26) shooting in the second half. Things looked good four minutes into the second half. Cashton Craig scored a layup and Justin Williams picked off a steal and finished it with a dunk to give the Eagles a 38-32 lead.
However, the Raiders would score the next 10 points to take the lead, while Edgewood College missed their next five shots over that same span. Only a three-point basket by Ben Wisniewski kept them in the lead at 41-40 with 10 minutes left to play.
Kent Faurote hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to keep the Eagles in front 52-49 with less than six minutes to play, but MSOE's Victor Bande would spark a decisive Raider run. Bande scored eight points, including two three-point baskets, as the Raiders took a 59-53 lead with three minutes left to play on a 10-1 run.
Edgewood College led most of the first half, scoring the first six points of the game and opening up their largest lead at 23-13. Wisniewski scored 12 of the Eagles' final 16 points of the first half, including a layup at the buzzer to put the Eagles ahead by four points.
Wisniewski lead the Eagles with 18 points and two assists. Faurote had 14 points and led the team in rebounds for the 13th consecutive game with eight boards. Jake Guziewski scored nine points, while Derek Nkemnji chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
MSOE (6-7, 4-1 NAC) received 11 points each from Bande and Oren Bloom. Cynerick Osinaike and Bob Slovensky scored nine points apiece. The Raiders shot just 39.2 percent, but made six of 14 three-point attempts and committed just eight turnovers.
Edgewood College will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday night and try to get back on the right track. The Eagles will pay a visit to Wisconsin Lutheran College for a 7:00 p.m. Northern Athletics Conference game.
