BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Roger Williams University men's basketball team outscored the University of New England 24-4 from the free throw line to come away with a 62-55 victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Recreation Center.

Six-foot-nine senior center Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) was the lone player in double figures for the winners, scoring 14 points to go with seven rebounds. Juniors Matt Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) and Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) added nine apiece for the Hawks (6-4, 2-1 CCC).

For UNE (0-10, 0-3), senior guard Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) tallied a game-high 20 points, including six conversions from behind the arc. Winn scored 17 in the first half. Junior Alex Alsadi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had 14 points on a 6-for-9 effort from the floor, and sophomore Charles Fenner III (Bronx, N.Y.) added 10, all of which came after halftime.

The game was tight throughout, although the Hawks trailed on just four occasions (each time by two points) during the contest. After a Winn three-pointer pulled the Nor'easters to within one (16-15) midway thru the first frame, the Hawks scored six consecutive points to lead 22-15. Roger Williams used three freebies and a trey from first-year Joseph Henry (Medway, Maine) during the run. Roger Williams went on to lead 31-28 at the break.

Flanagan dropped in a pair of buckets down low to start the second half, pushing the Hawks' advantage to seven (35-28). The margin remained around that level until Big Blue began to chip away at its deficit with just under 10 minutes remaining. A three-ball by Fenner, a layup by Alsadi and a Fenner fastbreak conversion gave the Nor'easters a 47-45 advantage with 6:41 on the clock.

After the teams did their scoring at the free throw line on the next few possessions, Flanagan scored in the paint to give Roger Williams the lead (50-49) for good with just under five minutes left. The hosts would go 8-for-8 at the line in the final minute to secure victory.

For the game, the Nor'easters were whistled for 27 fouls compared to just 10 for the home team. UNE committed 13 turnovers while forcing 18 RWU miscues.

The Nor'easters will be in search of their first win Tuesday when they host Gordon College for a CCC game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Roger Williams heads to Curry College for an 8 p.m. tilt that same evening.
