ARLINGTON, Va.—The Hood College men's basketball team (9-4, 2-3 CAC) remains perfect in 2012 and have now won five games in a row possibly making them the hottest team in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Blazers defeated CAC rival Marymount (3-10, 1-5 CAC) 73-62 Saturday afternoon giving the team its first road win in conference play this season. The five game winning streak is Hood's longest since the 2006-07 team that won nine in a row and went to the NCAA tournament.
The Blazers had four players in double-figures in a well rounded effort offensively. Senior forward Lavar Rich led all scorers with 16 points, including multiple big time dunks that sparked Hood throughout the game. Sophomore guard Cameron Cook scored 15 with two made threes and Adrien Straughn and Justin Stone each chipped in with 11 points apiece. Marymount was led by Jesse Konadu, who scored 15 points on the afternoon.
Rich had his first dunk while being fouled at the 15:44 mark of the first half to energize his Blazer teammates. "Lavar brought us some energy off of some thunderous dunks," said Stone. Hood took a 22-13 lead off a Cook three with 10:00 remaining but Marymount went on an 8-0 run that was capped with a Konadu three making the score 22-20. The Blazers then went on a 10-0 run of their own, which saw a three point basket by Stone and another big time dunk by Rich to put Hood up by 12.
Hood took an eight-point lead into the half and came out in the second half adding to its lead as freshman Adrien Straughn hit two threes in the first seven minutes of the stanza to give the Blazers a 46-37 lead with 13:18 remaining. Marymount would get no closer than six points the rest of the game as Hood would build its largest lead to 14 when Rich threw down again at the 6:13 mark. Hood kept its lead in double-figures for the rest of the game in route to its fifth straight win. The Blazers led the game for all but 42 seconds.
Hood shot a sensational 61 percent (27-of-44) for the game and made six threes to Marymount's four. Both teams ended up with 25 rebounds and Hood won the turnover battle 21-20. The win also gave Hood a 4-2 all-time record at Marymount.
Hood returns home to BB&T Arena for a crucial matchup against CAC rival York College (Pa.) as both teams will look to get back to .500 in conference play. The game will start at approximately 8 p.m. this Wednesday, January 11.
