MARIETTA, Ohio—Junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) poured in a season-high 21 points and had game-highs of five rebounds and five assists, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell to defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Marietta College, 99-78, today in a league contest at Fenton Court at Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio.
In addition to Givner for Heidelberg (4-9, 2-4 OAC), sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) scored 14 points and junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) added 10 points.
Marietta (9-4, 4-2 OAC) was led by Jacob Owens who matched Givner with 21 points on seven-of-eight from three-point range. Trevor Halter added 12 points and Tyler Hammond and Tyler Worstell had 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Student Princes opened the game with a 2-0 lead to start the game following a jumper by Fortkamp.
The Pioneers came back with a 10-0 run that spanned three minutes to take a 10-2 lead with 17:36 on the clock thanks to a Joe Puch three-pointer. Marietta built a lead as large as 22 points in the opening half with 8:10 remaining and entered halftime with a 51-29 lead as Conner Kirkpatrick made a lay-up at the buzzer.
Marietta led by at least 20 points for much of the second half, building a lead as large as 30 points with 9:38 to play.
A fast break dunk by Fortkamp at the 2:18 mark cut the deficit to 93-76, the Berg's smallest deficit of the second half.
The Student Princes shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) overall and just 36.0 percent (nine-of-25) from beyond the arc and were outrebounded by a 37-29 margin.
Marietta was 57.1 percent (36-of-63) from the field and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range and converted 80.0 percent (16-of-20) of their free-throw attempts. The Pioneers turned the ball over just 14 times.
The Berg continues its four-game road swing Wednesday, Jan. 11 with a 7:30 p.m. OAC contest at Otterbein University in Westerville.
