Senior forward Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) returned from a three-game absence to score a game-high 16 points as The University of Scranton men's basketball team knocked off Goucher College, 91-62, in the John J. Long Center on Friday evening.
Hawk came off the bench to finish 7-for-10 from the field and add five rebounds, two assists and a steal as Scranton won its fifth straight to improve to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference.
The Royals also received 13 points and five rebounds from sophomore guard Tommy Morgan (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminade) and 12 points off the bench from junior guard Tim Lavelle (Clarks Green, Pa./Scranton Preparatory).
After Goucher scored the game's first two points, Scranton went on a 16-0 run that included nine points by Lavelle. The Royals carried a 42-25 lead into halftime, then went on a 9-2 spurt early in the second stanza to put the game away.
Scranton received 52 points from its bench, led by Hawk and Lavelle. Freshman guard Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) added eight points and sophomore guard Michael Barr (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) had seven to boost the bench scoring.
The Royals also held a 25-8 advantage in second-chance points, the product of outrebounding the Gophers, 55-35, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Goucher (3-9, 0-2 Landmark) was led by freshman guards Damon Brooks (Takoma Park, Md./Springbrook), who scored 12 points, and Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville), who added 10. The Royals held the Gophers top scorer, freshman forward Alex Noble (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) to eight points. He came into the game averaging 19.3 points per game.
The Royals return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Catholic University in the Long Center.
