(GREENVILLE, Pa.) - Senior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) scored a team-high 16 points, but the Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 66-64, to Thiel College tonight (Wednesday, January 4, 2012) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the PAC. With the win, the Tomcats improve to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the PAC.
Thomas More raced out to an early 4-0 with when sophomore shooting guard Cameron Clemons (Louisville, Ky./Doss) made two free-throws with 18:03 to play in the first half. Thiel answered with a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 16-17 to play in the half when Devon Adams made a lay-up. Thomas More used a 7-0 run capped by a lay-up by sophomore point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) to take an 11-7 lead with 13:37 to play in the opening half. The Tomcats answered with a 15-2 run capped by an Austin Forbes lay-up with 6:48 to play in the half to to take a 22-13 lead. The Saints closed out the half on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 25-22 at halftime time when Stafford made two-free with 24-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 25-17 run to take a 47-42 lead with 9:31 when senior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) made a three-pointer. Thiel went on a 13-3 run capped by two free-throws by Adams to take a 55-50 lead with 4:50 to play in the game. Thomas More answered with an 8-2 run to retake the lead at 58-57 with 3:18 to play in the game when Stafford made a lay-up. Thiel would then close out the game on a 9-6 run for the 66-64 victory.
Three other Saints joined Stafford in double-figures as junior small forward Phil Feinberg (Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) scored 14, Whelan added 13 and Clemons finished with 10. Stafford and Feinberg led the team on the boards as they both had six rebounds. Berlekamp led the team in assists with four and Whelan led the team in steals with two.
Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (January 7) when it hosts Westminster College at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
