HAMBURG, NY - The Medaille College men's basketball team kept its conference slate clean as they used a big second half surge to roll past AMCC foe Hilbert College (85-60) this evening on the road. The Mavs continued to spread the wealth offensively with six Medaille players registering at least nine points in the victory.
The Mavs never trailed in this evening's game and seemingly had the game sealed with less than four minutes remaining in the first half and a (36-21) lead. However, the Hawks mounted a late charge that saw them outscore the Mavs (14-3) to draw within four at (39-35) heading into the break.
The Mavs would put an end quickly to that run as they scored 16 of the first 20 points scored in the second half to grab a (55-39) lead with (14:12) remaining in the second half. From that point on the Mavs would never look back as their lead swelled to as many as (28) points when the scoreboard read (82-54) with just under three minutes remaining.
Nine Mavericks found their way into the scoring ledger with Tyler Stevens leading the way with (14) points. He knocked down (5 of 8) shots from the floor, including going (4 for 6) from behind the arc. He is shooting a remarkable (50.8%) from three point range thus far this season, going (31 for 61). He was followed closely behind by Phil Maiarana who poured in (13) points.
Senior David Shuey was a beast on the glass as he gathered in a game high (12) caroms while chipping with (7) points. While Angel Flores continued to guide this Maverick offense in brilliant fashion, finishing with (8) assists while committing just one turnover. Coming off the bench to spark the Mavs was rookie Sean Bellomo who knocked down (5 of 7) shots from the floor for (11) points while also collecting four rebounds.
For the game the Mavs shot (50.9%) from the field as a team. They narrowly held an edge in points in the paint (30-26) but the real determining factor came on the glass and in second chance points as Medaille outrebounded the Hawks (42-29) and registered (24) second chance points to just (10) for Hilbert.
The Mavs improve to (11-1) overall on the season and remain atop the AMCC standings at (5-0). They have a busy weekend ahead as they will travel to Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday (1/7) for a 1:00pm game and then head to Pittsburgh, PA to take on defending AMCC Champion, La Roche College Sunday (1/8) at 1:00pm, in a pair of critical AMCC matchups.
