HENRIETTA, NY - Nate Novosel became the 25th man in school history to score 1,000 career points as he led the University of Rochester to a 76-62 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology at Clark Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Novosel finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Siedman also scored 20 points for Rochester, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor, 6 of 8 outside the arc. The last time Siedman played in Clark Gym, he scored a then-career high 16 points vs Brockport in the third place game of the Wendy's Classic. He hit four three-pointers that day,
Nate Vernnon scored 11 points for Rochester. John DiBartolomeo had nine points and seven assists. He sat out eight minutes of the second half when he drew his third foul.
Rochester, which is among others receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll this week, improved to 9-2. RIT is 4-5.
Justin Heisig scored 16 points for RIT. Eric Travis added 11 plus a game-high 10 rebounds. Gabe Nicasio had eight points in 17 minutes off the bench.
Baskets by Heisig and Brendan Harder brought RIT within 15-11 with 11:38 left in the first half. Rochester went on an 11-3 run in the next four minutes to build a 26-14 lead. Kevin Sheehy's basket started the burst. Siedman hit a three, Rob Reid made one bucket and Chris Dende sank four free throws. It was 41-28 at the half.
RIT opened the second half with an 8-0 run - three of the points on free throws by Travis - and drew within 41-36 in the first two minutes Sheehy made back to back baskets - he finished with six points - and that started a lengthy 10-4 run to restore the Rochester lead to 51-40 with 13:46 to play.
Novosel scored his 1,000th point on a three-point play. He hit a twisting runner in the lane and drew a foul on Travis. The free throw made it 1,000.
