Kyle Stockmal and Andy Stein combined for 44 points to lead the New York University men's basketball team to a 67-50 victory over Haverford College in the finale of the 2012 NYU Holiday Classic.

The Violets (9-0), who hosted the Classic on Monday and Tuesday, January 2-3, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan, rode Stockmal and Stein on offense and played one of their best defensive games of the season to earn the win in their final non-conference game before beginning University Athletic Association (UAA) play.

Stockmal poured in a career-high 24 points, shooting 9-12 from the floor and 5-7 from three-point range, and made a career-high four steals on defense. Stein netted 20 points, also on 9-12 shooting, and added seven rebounds. Both were named to the All-Classic Team, as was teammate Ryan Tana, who had nine points and six assists without a turnover in the victory.

"Kyle played a really strong overall game," said NYU head coach Joe Nesci. "He shot the ball wall and his defense was tremendous. It was his best overall game on both ends of the floor."

Max Wein also shined on the defensive end, holding the Fords' (3-8) leading scorer, Cam Baker, to zero points. In the opening game of the Classic, Wein held Clarkson's top scorer, Felix Llanos, to seven points.

As a team, NYU limited Haverford to just 31.0% (18-58) shooting.

"Max had two great defensive games in the Classic," noted Nesci. "As a team, we never let up defensively. Even if we missed a few shots we never let them sustain a big run. That was the key."

The Violets used a big run of their own late in the first half to take control of the game. Ian Goldberg pulled Haverford to within three, 18-15, before NYU went on an 11-0 run during which Stein drained threes on back-to-back possessions and Stockmal followed with another triple.

The Violets entered halftime leading 33-20 and stayed hot out of the gate, beginning the period on a 17-6 spurt capped by back-to-back Stein layups. That run gave NYU a 50-26 edge with 14:20 to play, and the Fords would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Stockmal, Stein and Tana were joined on the All-Classic Team by Goldberg and Clarkson University's Marques Charlton.

Goldberg led Haverford with 16 points and three assists, while Louis Cipriano also scored in double figures with 11. Brett Cohen pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Violets begin UAA play on Saturday when they host rival Brandeis University at Coles. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
