CASTLETON, Vt. - The Spartans kept it close with great shooting in the first 20 minutes, but No. 7 Williams enforced its will in the final half, finishing with a 107-82 victory over Castleton at Glenbrook Gym on Monday evening.
It was a tale of two halves, as the Spartans shot 13-for-26 from downtown and 46.3 percent overall to trail the seventh-ranked Ephs just 57-55 at the break. However in the second, Castleton managed just nine field goals overall while Williams made 18, including nine from behind the arc.
Freshman Mark Pryzbylkowski (New Egypt, N.J.) scored a career-high 16 points to lead the offense, with four triples and three assists. Junior Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) was the only other Spartan in double figures with 14 points and four boards.
Williams had five different players reach double figures, led by James Klem (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Michael Mayer (Durham, N.C.). Klem hit five treys and finished with 19 points overall while Mayer contributed 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Junior Nate Robertson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was also impressive, with nine points, ten assists, five rebounds and five steals.
Castleton came out aggressive, matching the Ephs with 13 points through the first 4:32 of the half. The Spartans continued to stay close, scoring on five consecutive trips to cut the lead to 37-39 with 8:49 remaining, highlighted by a pair of threes from Pryzbylkowski.
Williams managed to extend its lead to 51-42 with six minutes left, but Castleton wouldn't give in. The Spartans went on a 9-1 over the next three minutes to make it a one-point game. The two teams then traded points for the remainder of the half and Castleton went into the break trailing 57-55.
The Spartans got a foul shot to open the second half, but didn't score for the next eight minutes as the Ephs ran off 18 straight points. Williams pushed its lead to 85-58 with 9:30 remaining and the teams traded buckets over the last nine minutes for the 107-82 final.
Castleton drops to 4-5 overall with the loss while Williams improves to 11-1 on the year. The Spartans return to action Thursday, Jan. 5 at Elms for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
