Randolph-Macon - 82, Farmingdale State -75
Ashland, Va. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team was defeated, 82-75, by host school Randolph-Macon in the championship game of the 2011 Coaches Classic Sponsored by Kay Jewelers.
R-MC (9-3) was led by 16 points from Calvin Croskey. All-Tournament team members Adam Desgain and Lamar Giggetts each had 12 points in the Jackets' victory. Freshman Marcus Badger posted a career-high 11 points.
Farmingdale State (7-3) was paced by the tournament's most outstanding player junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Matthews had 18 points to go along with 16 rebounds in the championship game. Fellow all-tournament team selection senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) had 21 points to go along with 21 from Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.).
With three minutes to go in the first-half, R-MC found itself down 35-26. A jumper by Evan Jackson proved to be the first of six points to close the half for the freshman as he sparked an 8-1 run that sent the teams to the locker room with FSU up 36-34.
The game remained close with Mathews scoring his lone bucket of the second half at the 16:40 mark, giving the Rams a 44-39 advantage.
R-MC then went on an 18-4 run over the next three minutes, opening up a 57-48 lead on a lay in by Desgain.
The Rams battled back, tying the game at 71-71 on a layup by Flournoy with less than three minutes to go in the game.
After each team turned the ball over on their ensuing possessions, R-MC's Dylan Cole was fouled and knocked down two free-throws to put Randolph-Macon on top 73-71 with two minutes to go.
R-MC would get a stop on the defensive end and a Cole bucket on the offensive end extended the Jackets' advantage to 75-71. The Yellow Jackets sealed the win by going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds.
