HSU Falls Late To Gustavus Adolphus

LAS VEGAS — Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season, falling 71-69 to Gustavus Adolphus in the D3hoops.com Classic at the South Point Resort in Las Vegas.

The game featured to of the top three scorers in Division III basketball and both players lived up to their billing, Matt Addison had 32 points for Hardin-Simmons and GAC's Seth Anderson, who sat almost six minutes with four fouls, hit three straight jumpers in the final three minutes and finished with 22 points to propel GAC to the come-from-behind win.

HSU led 67-61 with 2:42 to play when Addison hit a pull-up jumper, Anderson answered with a jumper to cut it to 67-63. Andy Spears followed his own miss with the Cowboys' final points at the 1:57 mark but Anderson answered again.

The play of the game came with 1:14 to play when Bernard Stiggers was called for a flagrant foul when he caught Ben Biewen with an elbow trying to clear space. Biewen hit both free throws and Anderson hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to tie the game at 69 with :57 to play.

Addison had a jumper rim out with :31 to play and Biewen hit a pair of free throws to give GAC the lead with :20 to play. Addison missed a floater with six second remaining but the Cowboys corralled the rebound and John Derr's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer fell off to give GAC the win.

HSU led by 31-22 in the first half, but the Gusties used a 15-4 run to take a 37-35 halftime lead.

Gustavus was solid at the line hitting 26-of-34 shots, including 17-of-20 in the second half and HSU was just 9-for-17 at the free throw stripe.

HSU is now 8-1 on the year and GAC improved to 5-3. HSU will play Hanover at 3 p.m. on Friday.
