Houston Hodges' driving layup with one second left in regulation sent the Little Giants into overtime against Franklin College Thursday night. Wabash outscored the Grizzlies 12-5 in the extra session to claim a 75-68 victory.

Five Wabash players scored in double figures in the contest. Hodges finished with a career-best 13 points, while starters Brian Shelbourne (13 points), Aaron Zinnerman (15 points), Derek Bailey (11 points), and Pete Nicksic (14 points) each joined the freshman point guard.

Shelbourne also grabbed a game-high 11 points for his first career double-double. Nicksic filled in admirably for injured starter Nick Curosh. The sophomore post player hit 6-of-9 on the way to a career-high in total points, eclipsing the 13-point effort Nicksic had last season against Franklin and equaled against Allegheny.

Eight of Shelbourne's 11 boards came on the offensive end of the court, helping the Little Giants score 10 second-chance baskets.

The victory was the first for the 14th-ranked Little Giants (10-1) since losing at Transylvania University eight days ago.

Wabash owned a two-point lead at halftime, but Franklin used a 6-0 run thanks to two drives by Clay Starrett, a hard layup by Zach Mershbrock, and two free throws from Patrick Ellis to take a 40-35 lead with 12:28 left in regulation. The Grizzlies stretched their lead to six points midway through the second period before Wabash began the comeback.

Bailey, who battled an illness all week leading up to the game and was held scoreless in the first half, drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead to three points. Franklin pushed the advantage back to five, but Zinnerman answered with one of Wabash's five treys for the game. Both teams traded free throws to make it 51-49 in favor of Franklin with 6:55 left in the second period. Bailey then put Wabash back in front at the 6:22 mark with another long-range shot.

The Grizzlies pushed the lead to five points once again with 18 seconds left to play, but poor free throw shooting in the closing minute gave the Little Giants hope. Hodges hit one of two free throw attempts with 20 seconds left in regulation to make it a three-point contest. Patrick Ellis hit one of two free throws after Wabash fouled immediately, putting Franklin up four. Hodges drove to the hoop again for a layup, making it a 63-61 contest with nine second left. The Little Giants fouled once, and this time the Grizzlies missed both attempts. Bailey grabbed the rebound and immediately head coach Antoine Carpenter called timeout to set up the potential game-tying play. Hodges then completed his heroics with another driving score to tie the game, forcing overtime.

"We drew up a play that had Houston either driving to rim for game-tying score, or trying to kick out a pass for a jumper from one of the other guys on the court," Carpenter said. "Obviously he made the right decision, worked hard to get a good drive to the basket and hit the shot."

Nicksic scored the first basket of the extra session, but Franklin responded with a jumper by Gunner Erwin tied the game at 65-65. Wabash outscored Franklin 8-0 over the next two minutes to seal the victory.

The Grizzlies lived at the free throw line, attempting 30 charity tosses to only 16 for the host Little Giants. However, Franklin hit only 17 of those tries for 56.7 percent for the game. Wabash was 30-for-67 from the field compared to 24-of-53 for Franklin. The Little Giants connected on 5-of-17 shots from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies were 3-of-10. Wabash also grabbed 42 rebounds, the second-highest total this season for the Little Giants.

Erwin finished with 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Franklin (6-5) in both categories. Will Conoley added 13 points.

The game was the last for Wabash in the 2011 portion of the calendar. The Little Giants return to North Coast Athletic Conference play next weekend with games at Hiram and Allegheny.
