Matt Weik Scores Career-high 13 to Lead Pioneers to 71-51 Win Over North Central

University of Wisconsin-Platteville senior Matt Weik scored a career-high 13 points to lead three Pioneers in double figures in a 71-51 non-conference win over North Central on Tuesday night at Bo Ryan Court in Platteville.

The Pioneers (6-4) hit 60% of its shots from the field in the win, including a 46.2% effort from the 3-point line. Weik hit a 3 pointer and was 6-for-10 from the field for UW-Platteville as the Pioneers outscored the Cardinals bench by a 24 to 9 margin.

Joining Weik in double figures was senior Brett Stangel and Rob Stallion, who scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. It is the ninth game in 2011-2 that Stangel has been in double digits and for Stallion, he hit a career-best three 3-pointers.

Statistically, the Pioneers outrebounded North Central by a 32 to 26 margin and dished out 17 assists in the win.

The Cardinals (3-4) was led by Derek Rairdon and Landon Gamble, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively. 11 of the 30 points for the duo came from the free-throw line. An aggressive on-the-ball defense by UW-Platteville held North Central to 32% shooting from the field, including a 24% effort in the final 20 minutes.

After back-to-back 3 pointers to start the contest, UW-Platteville scored 19 of the next 26 points to build a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest. Twice, in the first half, North Central managed to cut the deficit to two; however, the Pioneers answered with a 20-to-4 run that pushed the Pioneers ahead by double digits for the remainder of the half and the contest.

Next, UW-Platteville returns to the rigors of WIAC play on Saturday, Dec. 17 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. matchup.
