CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland made a school single-game record 17 three-pointers in a 93-63 non-league victory over visiting SUNY Institute of Technology. The Red Dragons improved to 8-2 with the win.
The Red Dragons broke the previous school mark of 15 three-pointers set twice previously - last season versus Plattsburgh and in the 2007-08 season versus SUNYIT. Eight Cortland players made at least one trey, led by junior Brian Manning's (Elmira/Southside) 4-of-8 accuracy. Junior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) hit 3-of-7 three-pointers, while junior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side), sophomore John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell), senior Nick Sutedjo (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and sophomore Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) hit two threes each.
Freshman Kahreign Joseph (North Rockland) hit the record-tying three-pointer with 2:48 remaining and freshman T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) extended the record with a three-pointer on his first collegiate shot attempt in the final minute.
Smith finished with 17 points, six assists and three steals. Winter scored 14 points and handed out eight assists and Manning scored 14 points and registered three steals.
T'Andre Richardson (Utica/Utica-Proctor) led SUNYIT (1-6) with 20 points and four steals and also grabbed six rebounds. Derek Rowe (Mexico/Mexico Academy) totaled 16 points and 13 rebounds and Sejad Gromilic (Bosnia/Utica-Proctor) scored 15 points.
Cortland shot 42 percent from three-point range (17-of-41) and 47 percent overall from the floor. The Wildcats made 36 percent of their shots but only 4-of-19 three-pointers.
SUNYIT was within six at 28-22 after a Rowe layup with 7:51 left in the first half. Cortland finished the half on a 22-5 run, featuring three Manning three-pointers, and led 50-27 at halftime. The Red Dragons' lead remained in the 20-point range for almost the entire second half.
Cortland returns to action on Wednesday, January 4, when it hosts Nazareth College at 7 p.m. in a non-league game.
