The Falcons remain unbeaten in WIAC play after a wild come-from-behind victory at Oshkosh, winning in double overtime, 105-99, on Saturday night.
After trailing for nearly 35 minutes, Shane Manor (Altoona, WI, UW-Superior) sent the game into overtime, hitting a layup at the buzzer to tie the score at 84-84. The first overtime period concluded as Manor missed a shot at the buzzer, keeping the game tied at 90-90.
The Falcons opened up scoring in the second overtime as Manor grabbed an offensive rebound and put in the layup to give the Falcons the lead for good as UWRF outscored the Titans, 15-7, down the stretch. Manor scored eight points and recorded a steal in the second overtime as the Falcons never trailed in the final five minutes.
With 1:33 remaining in regulation, Oshkosh led by 83-78, before the Falcons stormed back. Two Titan turnovers in the final 90 seconds, and a missed free throw, opened the door for the Falcons. In the final four seconds Wade Guerin (Bloomington, MN, St. Croix Lutheran HS) grabbed the rebound on a missed free throw and Manor put in a layup as time expired to keep the Falcons hopes alive.
The 105 points is the most by River Falls since Dec. 29, 2006, when the Falcons won 110-66 against North Central (Minn). Six Falcons reached double-digit scoring, including three players with more than 20 points.
"This was just a great come-from-behind win for us tonight," said Falcon Coach Jeff Berkhof. "The guys kept fighting and it paid off for for us in the end."
Manor led the Falcons with 25, including eight in the final five minutes. Chris Palmer (Faribault, MN, St. Mary's University) and Taylor Peterson (Roselle, IL, Conant HS) each had career-highs in a Falcon uniform, and each surpassing 20-points. Palmer scored 21 points with five rebounds and hitting 8-12 shots from the floor. Peterson had 20 points, a pair of steals and assists, and went 3-4 from beyond the arc.
Guerin, Aaron Anderson (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater HS) and Ollie White (Minnetrista, MN, Mound-Westonka HS) were each in double figures. Guerin added 10 points with 13 rebounds. White had 13 points and Anderson finished with 10. Brian Kimble (Stevenson Ranch, CA, Coll. of Canyons JC) sparked the defense with four steals, including one in the final 90 second of regulation which jump-started the Falcon comeback.
The Falcons shot 55.9 percent from the field, 56.3-percent from three-point land, out-rebounded the Titans 35-30, and had fewer turnovers. Yet, they still trailed nearly the entire game as Oshkosh could not miss shooting nearly 60-percent in regulation, led by John Flannigan with 28 points. The Falcon defense buckled down in the extra periods, holding Flannigan to just two points and 0-3 shooting from the field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC. Up next, they return home to face Stout on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Falcons have won 13 of their last 14 at home, including defeating the defending National Champions, St. Thomas, earlier this year.
