WASHINGTON – CUA placed six players in double figures, led by Shawn Holmes' career-high 26 points, and the Cardinals remained unbeaten with a 111-93 win over Mt. Aloysius on Monday evening. The 111 points are the most CUA has scored since a 115-112 win over Salisbury in 1995.
Monday's game featured plenty of offense with Chris Kearney (17), Billy Donovan (12), Darrell Carroll (12), Steve Limberiou (11) and Andy Roell (11) joining Holmes in double figures. Kearney also ripped down a career-high 16 rebounds, while Holmes and Donovan led the way with four assists each.
CUA shot 56% from the field and sank 34 of 45 free throws (75%), while outscoring the Mounties 54-24 in the paint and 20-6 in fast break points.
Mt. Aloysius took an early 12-6 lead on a Kory Gibson 3-pointer at the 15:09 mark of the first half, but CUA answered with a 20-3 run to surge in front 26-15 with 11:49 to play before halftime.
A Holmes jumper at the 7:58 mark put CUA in front 30-19, while Donovan's layup with five minutes to go again put the Cardinals in front by 11.
Andy Roell's 3-pointer at the 2:27 mark made it a 15-point advantage for CUA, and Pete Schramm's jumper with just over a minute to go sent the Cardinals into halftime with a 52-34 lead.
Three straight buckets by CUA to begin the second half extended the Cardinals lead to 22, and after Roell scored on a fast break, CUA was in front by 24.
The lead reached 25 on Holmes' bucket at the 7:40 mark, but the Mounties continued to hang around, and were able to trim it to 11 on Jeff Stem's free throw with 1:34 remaining in the game.
The Cardinals never let Mt. Aloysius get any closer though, and sank 6 of 8 foul shots in the final minute to seal their ninth straight win.
Mt. Aloysius was led on the offensive end by Stem with 23 points on 8 of 16 shooting, while Gibson (21), Rodney Clark (14) and Howard Ferguson (11) also hit for double-digits. Howard was the team leader in assists with five, while Kyle Baughman finished with three steals.
The Cardinals remain at home for their next game, hosting Gallaudet on Saturday evening inside the DuFour Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
