COUGARS BEAT MARINERS 78-50

Weston, MA- The MEC Cougars defeated the Maine-Maritime Mariners 78-50 on Saturday Nov.19, 2011 in the consolation game of the Regis Tip-Off Tournament. The Cougars win improved their record to 2-1 while the Mariners of Maine Maritime fell to 0-3. 

The Cougars aggressive defense didn't allow the Mariners to score a bucket until the 15 minute mark. MEC scored 11 straight points before Maine Maritime would hit a pair of free throws. MEC pressured Maine Maritime to committ mulitple shot clock violations and  led by as much as 23pts in the half. The lead was cut by 19pts, with a strong push by Mane Maritime mainly from Shawn Dostie (9pts 8 rebs.). The Cougars in were led in the half by Winston Douglas 12pts, 5 rebounds, 3-6 3pt line, 3-4 Free throw line. Rookie Standout Valin Williams 6pts, 9 rebounds 3-3 FG,  and 2 blocks. This was key because Williams was making his 3rd career appeareance. Jarrel Deare and Jovan Deare contributed with 7 and 6pts each while also tallying 3 rebounds each.

The 2nd half, started off as same as the first, with the lead increasing to 25pts with 15 minutes to go. As the game round down, Maine Maritime only got as close as 26pts. Strong contributions from everyone who played in the half, led to the final score. Kayode Prime, Richard Nelson and Sharif Boone were key players for MEC in the half. Prime scored 4pts and 3 rebs. Nelson was a spark off the bench contributing 6pts and 2-2 from 3pt. range. Sharif Boone scored 4pts and 3 rebonds in the half.

Head Coach Chris Pursoo said "After a tough loss last night, its sometimes tough to get up for a consolation game the next afternoon. But I thought the guys did a good job of getting off to a good start and we got nice contributions from our bench today, which will help us out in the long run."

MEC was led in the win by Junior Jarrel Deare. He tallied 16pts (6-9 FT), 4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Junior Jovan Deare tallied 14pts (10-12 FT/FTA), 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Junior Winston Douglas scored 12pts (3-6 3pt. range, 3-6 FT/FTA), 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Freshman Valin Williams tallied 10pts (5-6 FG) and grabbed 15 rebounds (gm high). Jovan Deare was named to the All Tournament Team. 

Maine Maritime was led by Shawn Dostie to scored 12pts, Tyler Pineo with 11pts, and Andy Ball tallied 10pts.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday Nov.22, 2011 when they play against New Jersey City University at NJCU. Game time is 8pm.
