Wesley Escapes With Narrow 71-67 Victory over Hood Men

DOVER, Del.--The Hood College men's basketball team 4-2, 1-1 CAC) dropped a narrow 71-67 Capital Athletic Conference decision on the road to the Wesley College Wolverines (2-4, 1-1 CAC) Saturday afternoon.

Hood found itself in a double-figure hole midway through the opening period and trailed by as many as 16 in the half (28-12). A Lavar Rich dunk and a Trey Quinn free throw allowed the Blazers to claw to within 37-26 just before the break.

Hood came out of the locker room on a hot streak, nailing four of their first five shots, to close to within seven (42-35). The Blazers were unable to get a stop at the other end however and Wesley maintained the upperhand for the majority of the half.

A clutch three-pointer by Hood's Justin Bowens trimmed the deficit to four following a Wesley turnover and Rich cashed in on a layup to make it a two-point game (55-53) with 9:48 left, giving the Blazers new life. Wesley responded on the other end as Paul Reynolds converted a conventional three-point play, making it 58-53.

The Blazers and Wolverines traded baskets over the next several possessions before Cameron Cook caught fire, hitting a layup and a trademark three-pointer on consecutive trips to regain a 63-62 lead for Hood with 5:33 to play in regulation.

After an Adrien Straughn layup boosted the Blazers' lead to three, Wesley's JJ Bryant buried a three to tie the game at 65-65 with 2:29 to go. Cook's triple try at the other end was off the mark and David Langan notched the go-ahead bucket with 1:40 left. Hood had chances to tie or take the lead in the closing moments but was unable to find the bottom of the net. Wesley's Chris Douglas connected on 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 13 seconds to ice the victory.

Justin Stone led all scorers with 16 points, including three triples, while Rich had 15 and Cook and Ramon Smith chipped in nine apiece. Stone also picked off three more steals to move into sole possession of fifth place on Hood's career steals list (87). Quinn dished seven assists, one away from tying his career-high.

Hood continues CAC play Wednesday at Frostburg State University at 8 p.m.
