(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Senior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 68-55 win over Grove City College today (Saturday, December 3, 2011) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the PAC and with the loss, the Wolverines fall to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the PAC.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early 10-7 lead when Christian Durbin made two free-throws with 8:12 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 10-2 run capped by two free-throws by sophomore point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) to take a 17-12 lead with 4:51 to play in the opening half. Grove City responded with a 7-1 run to take a 19-18 lead with 2:59 to play in the half when Brett Matson made a three-pointer. The Saints used a 7-2 run to take a 25-21 lead when sophomore power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) made a lay-up with 47-seconds to play in the opening half. Grove City got two free-throw makes by J.T. Schwartz with 38-secons to play in the half to cut the Saints' lead to 25-23 at halftime.
Grove City opened the second half on a 4-2 run to tie the game at 27-27 when Mitch Marmelstein made a jumper at the 17:46 mark of the second half. Thomas More answered with a 35-21 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 62-48 with 2:32 to play in the game when senior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) made two free-throws. Grove City closed out the half on a 7-6 run, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More won the game, 68-55.
Joining Stafford in double-digit scoring was Whelan with 15 points. Junior small forward Phil Feinberg (Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) led the Saints on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Whelan and Berlekamp led the team in assists with three each.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday (December 7) when they host PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
