Auggies score 60-45 win over Johnnies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Parker Hines (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 60-45 win over Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Hines scored his career-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, while adding five assists and three rebounds to lead Augsburg, which moves to 3-0 overall (1-0 MIAC) with the win. Also finishing in double-figures for the Auggies were Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS), who finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Grzesiak-Grimm finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor while adding nine rebounds, while Polta converted on 4-of-7 from the floor and also added nine rebounds.

Saint John's (2-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC) was led by Aaron Barmore (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who finished with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists.

After battling for the opening seven minutes, Augsburg used an 8-0 run and an 8-3 run to take a 25-11 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the first half. The Johnnies were able to cut the Auggie lead to five, but Augsburg scored the final seven points of the half and took a 34-22 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Saint John's was able to cut the Augsburg lead to 37-27 with 17:34 on the clock, but that was as close as the Johnnies would get. Augsburg outscored St. John's 23-8 over the next 12 minutes and cruised to the 60-45 win.

For the game, Augsburg shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the floor, while holding St. John's to just 35.1 percent (20-of-57). The Auggies claimed a narrow 33-31 advantage on the boards but were able to convert on 14-of-16 from the free throw line, while only allowing the Johnnies to make 2-of-5.

Both teams return to action on Saturday (12/3), with Augsburg hosting Concordia College-Moorhead and Saint John's traveling to Northfield to take on Carleton College.
