BROOKLINE, Mass. – No. 9 ranked MIT scored the game's first eight points and led 17-2 en route to a convincing 93-50 win over Newbury College in non-conference men's basketball action on Thursday night. Senior Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) was dominant in the pivot, scoring 33 points and collecting 14 rebounds to help the Engineers improve to 7-0 on the year. Newbury drops to 3-3 with the loss.

Tech raced out to the early lead, as Hollingsworth scored 10 points in the game's first 5:11 to put the Cardinal and Gray on top, 17-2. The Night Hawks would close the gap to five, at 29-24, after Steve Rosemond's (Everett, Mass.) layup with 5:49 to go in the first half. Tech would take a 34-28 lead into the break thanks in large part to Hollingsworth's 14 first-half points.

The Engineers came out of the locker room with the same urgency as the start of the game, scoring seven straight points, capped by Jamie Karraker's (Morgantown, W. Va.) three-ball to lead 41-28, forcing a Newbury timeout. Three straight shots from long range by juniorMitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Karraker extended MIT's lead to 50-33 with 15:24 to go in the game.

After a Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) layup, Tech would outscore the Night Hawks 17-1 over the next 4:30 to lead 67-36, as Hollingsworth accounted for 11 points during the run. Hollingsworth extended MIT's lead with three more buckets to put the Cardinal and Gray ahead, 73-38. From there the Engineers would cruise to their seventh straight win to start the 2011-12 campaign. 

Junior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) posted his fifth double-double in seven games, recording 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Karraker had 15 points on five-of-10 shooting from long range. Tech enjoyed a significant 48-22 advantage on the glass, which helped lead to 25 second change points.

The Engineers shot 55.9% (33-59) from the field while holding Newbury to just 32.7% (18-55) for the game.

MIT will return home to host Lesley University on Saturday, December 3. The Engineers and Lynx will square off in Rockwell Cage at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Newbury travels to Trinity College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
