GLENSIDE, Pa. Two overhauled rosters took to the court at Arcadia Wednesday night, as Elizabethtown's men's basketball team faced a Knights team that welcomed nine newcomers this season. The Jays know all about that, with eight first-year varsity players on their roster. Inexperience may have been the story line, but it was a veteran stealing the show, as the Knights' Colin McCarthy scored 20 points to lead his team to a 75-67 Commonwealth Conference-opening victory at the Kuch Center.

E-town shot 40 percent on the night, and though the Blue Jays (1-4, 0-1 CC) held a five point lead with nine minutes to go in the first half, it would not be enough to hold off the hard-charging Knights (2-2, 1-0 CC).

McCarthy's 3-pointer answered a Kyle McConnell bucket and sent Arcadia off on a 9-0 run. Like it did last Tuesday at Stevenson, Elizabethtown clawed back to reclaim the lead on a Ben Cable trey, 29-26, with 3:42 to go in the first half.

The back-and-forth wasn't over, however. Rashon Brock and Travis Saltus each made lay-ups for the home team, and then McCarthy ripped off five straight to end the half. Arcadia led 35-29 at the break, forcing E-town to try and rally in the second half for the fourth time in five games. The only game in which the Blue Jays have led at the half this season was also at Stevenson.

Andrew Mantz put E-town in front for the only time in the second half with a lay-up at the 15:12 mark. Arcadia would distance itself from the Blue and Gray over the middle stages of the second half. E-town was, however, sparked by the play of some of its newest players. Hempfield grad Lee Eckert tied McConnell for the team lead with 13 points. Eckert came off the bench and was a proficient 6-of-11. He also had eight rebounds.

The Blue Jays had to look in the direction of its bench for scoring, as the starting five were lcoked down by the Knights. Outside of McConnell's 13, no other starter scored more than five points in a combined 3-for-14 shooting effort. Leading scorer Joe Schwalm did not register a basket and finished with a single point. Arcadia's starting five outscored the Jays starting five by 30 in the contest, 54-24.

Another of Arcadia's nine incoming players, Aaron Lee Webb hit a jumper that pushed the Knights' lead to 10 with just over nine minutes to play. The lead grew to as many as 14 points for the Knights, who got their second victory all-time in the Commonwealth Conference. Their first came at the hands of E-town in the final game of the regular season this past February.

Will Schlosser hit a pair of triples and was perfect on four free throw attempts for a season-high 12 points. He was joined by Jon Markel who also had 12, but on a 5-of-9 effort from the floor. The Elizabethtown bench earned their minutes with 43 combined points. That was well better than Arcadia's 21 bench points.

Khalief Trawick supported his teammate McCarthy with 10 points. Arcadia also received solid scoring nights from Joe Brown (nine points) and Saltus (eight). McConnell had six rebounds and five steals for E-town in addition to his 13 points.

E-town returns home Saturday to take on Messiah at 4 p.m. At halftime of the game Elizabethtown College and the Blue Jay Athletic Association will honor the College's 2011 championship teams and coaches who earned distinction as conference Coach of the Year in their respective sports with a halftime ceremony. Admission is free and the men's game is preceded by the women's game at 2 p.m.
