WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Lee Vazquez (Attleboro, Mass.) continued his incredible scoring show as he poured in a career high 38 points to power unbeaten Westfield State University to a 78-56 victory over Regis College on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Vazquez has scored an even 100 points in his last three games for the 5-0 Owls, including 31 points vs. both Emmanuel College and Fisher College.

The smallest player on the court at 5-6, Vazquez also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals vs. Regis. The explosive guard shot 13 for 26 from the field and 6 for 6 from the foul line. Exhibiting his NBA shooting range, he was 6 for 13 from 3-point land.

"It's all clicking for me right now," said Vazquez. "I worked hard over the summer and it's carried over to this season. I did rush a few shots at the end of the game because I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that I had 38 points and wanted 40."

It was also an historic night for Westfield 6-7 junior center Matt Devine (Pembroke), who set a school single game record with eight blocked shots. Devine, who was honored prior to the game for breaking the school career record for blocked shots earlier this season, had held the previous single game record of seven rejections, a feat he has accomplished four times, including twice this season.

Dubbed "The Big Easy", Devine nearly posted at triple double with 10 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

"I was really excited to hear that Matt got eight blocks," said Vazquez, who noted his classmate could have had a few more blocks but he was whistled for some borderline fouls.

With Vazquez pumping in half of his team's first half points and Devine dominating the inside with five blocks and six rebounds, the Owls took a 38-29 halftime lead.

Westfield held its biggest lead in the first half, 34-19, when Vazquez drained an NBA trey at the 5:46 mark.

A dunk by freshman Grant Cooper (Northampton) gave Westfield a 42-31 edge and the Owls led by double digits the rest of the game.

Cooper was the only other Westfield player in double figures with 11 points; he also grabbed eight rebounds. The Owls held their turnovers to a minimum (15) and shot 45 percent from the field.

Regis struggled, shooting 27 percent from the field, including 5 for 25 from 3-point range, and 13 for 24 from the foul line. Ryan Chambers was the only Regis player in double figures with 17 points. Ethan Peana finished with seven points and a team-high eight boards.
