The Maryville College Scots traveled to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday evening to take on the Berry College Vikings. MC advanced to 4-2 on the season with a strong 68-51 victory over the NCAA South Region opponent.
Maryville shot 37% in the first half behind Ben Williamson's eight points while the Scots' defense held Berry to a 26% shooting effort. MC received numerous second shot opportunities as they out rebounded the home team 25-15 before the intermission.
The Scots pushed their 27-21 halftime lead to a 15-point advantage in the first five minutes of the second half. A Williamson three-pointer concluded the first five minute barrage of defense that allowed Berry only four points. MC's defense repeated the task at the 10 minute mark, surrendering only five more points. Wes Lambert's trey with 10 minutes remaining made the score 52-30, securing their biggest lead of the game. MC would cruise through the final minutes to secure the 17 point victory, out rebounding the Vikings 45-25 on the evening.
Maryville was paced by Christian Ford's 13 points. The freshman was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Senior Ben Williamson posted an 11 point, 8 rebound effort after hitting a trio of treys. Milton Stanley added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman post player Joey Bodewig tallied 10 points while hauling down 7 boards and senior Donald Rucker paced MC with Williamson with 8 rebounds.
The Scots will return home to host Methodist University on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
