Men still unbeaten after edging IWU

UW-Whitewater, ranked 24th in the D3hoops.com poll, upped its record to 5-0 with a 65-53 win over Illinois Wesleyan University Wednesday night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

With the game tied 11-11 at 11:17, UW-W went on an eight point run, with senior center Chris Davis scoring four of those, to lead 19-11 with 7:18 on the clock.  The Titans came back to within 20-17, but Whitewater scored the next seven points for a 27-17 at the 3:46 mark.  IWU put together its own run, eleven straight, to lead 28-27, their first lead of the game with 0:55 left in the half.  Whitewater went into the lockerroom with a 31-28 lead.

UW-W led despite shooting 38% from the floor in the first half, including 4-16 from three point range.  The Warhawks countered with four fewer turnovers.
 
The teams stayed closely matched through the first fifteen minutes of the second half.  Whitewater held a slim 49-46 lead at the 4:41 mark, then went off 10-0 to break the game open.  The Warhawks' lead was never in single digits the rest of the way.

Whitewater shot 26 threes, making eight, three more than IWU.  And the Warhawks protected the ball, with 12 turnovers to 24 for the Titans.  UW-W also enjoyed an advantage at the line, making 15-21, while IWU hit 8-13.  Illinois Wesleyan shot 44% from floor and limited Whitewater to 38%.

Senior center Chris Davis led UW-W with a double-double, scoring 13 points and leading both teams with ten rebounds.  Sophomore point guard Alex Merg topped both teams with 16 points and six assists, and junior forward Luke Knoble added 11 points.  Junior center Kevin Reed topped the Titans with ten points, and sophomore forward Victor Davis led IWU with seven boards.  Senior guard Eliud Gonzalez dished out five assists.

IWU is 4-2.

UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stout Saturday at 6:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
