Despite having three players in double figures, the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team fell at home to visiting Utica tonight 74-65. The loss for Oneonta drops them to 1-2 on the young season while the Pioneers move to 3-1.
Junior Cameron Boyden (Vestal/Vestal) and freshman Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Catholic) each scored 13 points to lead the Red Dragons. Senior Lukas Slivinsky (Brewster/Brewster) added 10 points.
Trailing 43-40 at the 13:48 mark of the second half, the Pioneers put together an 18-6 run over the next nine minutes to seize control of the contest. A George Schultz (Ridgefield, NJ) jumper gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 48-47. Schultz finished the game with nine points.
The Red Dragons were in command at the break, leading 32-18. Neither team shot particularly well during the opening half, but Oneonta made four, three-point baskets including three Kelly.
Utica had five players in double figures led by junior Jeff Ward (Ossining), who had 16 points and a game high 11 rebounds.
Oneonta will be in action this Friday at home versus Buffalo State in the SUNYAC opener for both teams beginning at 8pm.
