PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Lebanon Valley cruised to the Doubletree Carnegie Mellon Invitational title Sunday, topping the host Tartans 78-58 for their second tournament championship in as many weeks.
The Dutchmen (4-1) won their fourth game in a row after also capturing their own Rinso Marquette Tournament last weekend. Danny Brooks had a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Dutchmen, while 6-1 guard Jordan Stewart (10 points, 11 rebounds) had his fourth consecutive double-double for LVC.
Brooks and Joe Meehan (14 points) were named to the all-tournament team as the Dutchmen used a 14-2 first-half run to turn a one-point Tartan lead into a double-digit advantage before halftime.
Joe Kromka led the Tartans (3-2) with 18 points and seven assists, but the hosts couldn't overcome cold shooting in the first half (8-for-28) and a big advantage by the Dutchmen down low as LVC held a 42-32 rebounding edge and a 42-22 advantage on points in the paint.
Down 17-16 at the midway point of the first half, LVC took control of the game with consecutive three-pointers by Cameron Prince and Joey Giangiobbe sparking a red-hot 23-5 stretch to end the first half up 39-22.
CMU cut the lead down to single digits to start the second half with an 8-0 spurt, but the Dutchmen quickly regained their momentum with 14 unanswered points, including three jumpers by Matt O'Brien and two buckets apiece by Brooks and Meehan, to take a 22-point lead at 59-37 with 9:50 left.
The Dutchmen cruised from there, with the reserves closing out the game for a 20-point win.
LVC will return home to open Commonwealth Conference play Wednesday night, hosting Messiah at 8 p.m.
