Nazareth shoots down Rochester, 82-64

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Jason Corletta led a four-player contingent in double figures with 24 points for host Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers handed the University of Rochester its first men's basketball defeat of the season, 82-64, in a non-conference game.

Nazareth improved to 3-1 overall, while the Yellowjackets, ranked seventh nationally by d3hoops.com, fell to 2-1. Nazareth is off until Nov. 30 when the Golden Flyers host a pair of first-round games in the Wendy's Classic. Seedings will be announced Sunday.

Nazareth used some torrid first-half shooting to surge to an early lead and the Yellowjackets never recovered. Nazareth went 10 for 16 (.625) from three-point range in the first half, including a 60-foot heave from junior Tyshun Stephens that beat the halftime horn, to take a 40-29 lead. Stephens had four three-pointers overall to finish with 14 points. He added four assists and had his third straight turnover-free game.

In the second half, Rochester closed to within six points, 49-43, following a three-point basket by Chris Dende with 15:07 left, but Nazareth answered with a three-point basket by Corletta and a two-pointer from Phil Scaffidi to regain its double-digit advantage, 54-43. Nazareth was comfortably in front the rest of the way as Scaffidi made six free throws in the closing minutes and Corletta hit three more.

Corletta's 24 points included five three-pointers in seven attempts. He went 8 for 13 from the field overall and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Brad Ford added 15 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Scaffidi scored all 14 of his points in the second half and added seven assists and seven rebounds.

For Rochester, junior guard John DiBartolomeo scored 15 points and passed for nine assists. Dende added 14 and Nate Vernon scored 12.
