Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball teams' 2011-2012 home opener featured an offensive explosion by the home team, as BC eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the first time in nearly two years, with the Bulldogs topping the Panthers of the SUNY College at Old Westbury by a score of 101-86 earlier tonight at the West Quad Center.
With the win, Brooklyn improves to 3-1 overall on the season, while the Old Westbury falls to 1-1 overall.
The Bulldogs last scored over 100 points on November 21, 2009, when Brooklyn defeated Mitchell College 110-64 at the Elms College Tournament in Chicopee, MA.
Leading the way for BC was senior guard Tyshawn Russell, who registered a new career-high in scoring with 34 points on the night, while shooting 10-of-21 from the field and going 12-for-13 from the line. Russell also added seven rebounds and dished out five assists.
Junior Kavon Baker also set a new career-best mark with 20 points, to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Amil John nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, to go with five assists, while junior Steven Grant chipped in with 19 points coming off the bench. Classmate Keiran Halton grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while adding nine points.
For Old Westbury, Jamal Little led the way with a team-high 24 points. Kerel Mitchell added 21 points, while Rashawn McCarthy and Curtis Leslie contributed with 16 and 11 points, respectively. McCarthy also dished out six assists, while Rob Sanders recorded nine rebounds.
Brooklyn opened the game on a 9-0 run to take early control of the game as junior Filipp Bochkov capped the run with a three-pointer. The Panthers would begin to chip away at their deficit and eventually tie the game of the first time at 28-28 with 6:03 remaining in the first half on a layup by Mitchell. Mitchell's three would later tie the game again at 32 all with 5:09 remaining before intermission. Old Westbury would never hold the lead in the half, as Brooklyn would head into the locker room with a 45-39 advantage.
The second half featured much of the same as Old Westbury would play from behind. After a Tavon McNair three-point play cut the Panthers deficit to one 51-50, with 17:29 remaining in the ballgame, the Bulldogs would go on an 18-9 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 69-59, at the 12:28 mark.
Brooklyn would lead by as many as 19, 84-65, with 7:36 left, as the Bulldogs would cruise the rest of the way on to their 101-86 win.
BC shot 49.3% (35-for-71) from the field and 43.8% (7-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also made the most of their free throw opportunities, going 24-for-30 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.
Old Westbury shot 42.9% (33-for-77) from the field and 37.1% (13-for-35) from three. The Panthers also shot 46.7% (7-for-15) from the line.
Brooklyn also held the slight rebounding edge, 45-41, and forced the Panthers into 20 turnovers. The Bulldogs committed 15 turnovers.
BC will be back in action on Tuesday, November 29th, as the Bulldogs will play host to borough and conference rival the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in the first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) game of the 2011-2012 season. The Cougars are the reigning CUNYAC Champions.
