WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Washington & Lee University led throughout in an 80-65 non-conference men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday night.

The Generals (3-1) took a 39-28 lead into the half and then held on as SU (0-2) battled for the final 20 minutes.

Although Washington & Lee left Shingleton Gymnasium with a 15-point victory in the first meeting between the future ODAC opponents since 2001, the margin was single digits for a majority of the second.

Shenandoah cut the deficit into that single-digit for the last time following a pair of Dominic Chappell free throws with 3:41 remaining.

Generals forward JD Ey, who had 18 points and nine rebounds, answered on the ensuing trip down the floor with a jumper in the lane and W&L scored 11 of the final 16 points of the game to coast home to the victory.

The closest margin in the second half was six points on three different occasions, the last of which occurred on an Avery Green fastbreak layup with 12:13 remaining.

Washington & Lee answered this 8-4 SU spurt with a 12-3 run over a span of 2:42 and was never seriously threatened again.

Larry Whitaker led the visitors with 21 points and 11 rebounds. He was one of four players in double figures for the Generals.

The Hornets also had four players score at least 10 points. Chappell had 18, Bryce Mitchell 12, James Bowens 11 and Green 10.

W&L had a 45-26 and shot 44.3 percent. SU shot 46.2 percent on a 24 of 52 performance from the field.

Shenandoah is back on the court this weekend with a pair of games in the South Region Challenge hosted by Mary Washington. SU takes on Hampden-Sydney on Saturday before facing the host Eagles Sunday.
